Whore of the Orient hits more trouble

Looks like the new game from Team Bondiauthors of L.A. Noire, just can’t catch a break. The project has been in a special kind of development hell for quite some time now and trouble just keeps coming its way. Jieh-Yung Lo, who is a City of Monash councilor, is upset that the game uses the word “Orient” in its title (the word “Whore” certaintly doesn’t help matters). He says that this word is a cultural equivalent of the N-word and it reminds everybody about 19th century “racial-colonial conception”. The councilor wants for Team Bondi to not only remove the title, but remove the development of the game itself. Permanently. If you’ve made a facepalm while reading this story, then you’re not alone. Where was Jieh-Yung when the game was announced? Why is changing the name not enough? Lo claims that China and Australia (where Team Bondi are located) “need to build greater trust and cultural understanding”, but how exactly does he hope to achieve it with an international gaming scandal? Let’s just hope that Whore of the Orient will be released soon with its name intact.
