It was widely rumoured that at E3, Sony and Gaikai would enter partnership. Today Sony announced plans to purchase Gaikai for the sum of $380 million.
Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO and President noted that it would allow users “to instantly enjoy a broad array of content ranging from immersive core games with rich graphics to casual content anytime, anywhere on a variety of internet-connected devices.”
Gaikai CEO David Perry continued adding that Sony intend to “harness the power of the interactive cloud and to continue to grow their ecosystem, to empower developers with new capabilities, to dramatically improve the reach of exciting content and to bring breathtaking new experiences to users worldwide.”
Could Sony’s next-gen console be the harbinger of Digital Distribution through the inclusion of cloud streaming? Only time will tell.
