This is the sort of rumor I can get behind, with Sony ruling out the need for an always-on internet connection with their next-gen home console. During an interview in the latest issue of GameInformer, Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony’s Worldwide Studios, noted that the disparity in web availability makes it not worth considering.
“Did we consider it? No, we didn’t consider it. The main reason being that many countries don’t have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw [that] do not really have robust Internet.”
It was rumoured that Microsoft’s next-gen console would require constant connection to the internet in order to function, with the unveiling of the future of Xbox on May 21st, perhaps we’ll find out.
