You click the link and before you know it, your systems infected with Malware. That’s not a new trick for the internet, but research group Revuln have found a similar trick within EA’s Origin client, putting up to 40 million gamers at risk.
In short, clicking an “origin://” link can be enough for the program to download a dynamic link library file to your computer, the full paper detailing the exploit can be read here.
An EA spokesperson addressed the issue noting that “Our team is constantly investigating hypotheticals like this one as we continually update our security infrastructure,”
We recommend taking the utmost care when dealing with “origin://” links and taking note of the URL paths, don’t become a statistic.
