The latest prequel to the popular PlayStation exclusive series, God of War: Ascension, will be the first God of War title with a competitive multiplayer mode. The title is under development by the Santa Monica, division of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.
The story revolves around Kratos as he embarks on a quest to break the blood oath that binds him to the god, Ares. Set 6 months after Kratos is tricked into killing his wife and child, he is caged within a Titan sized prison for the living damned, fighting both insanity and the furies.
Todd Pappy noted “The bar is set quite high for this franchise as each God of War title succeeds in being better than the last,”“But, unlike previous releases, we’re providing a deeper look into Kratos’ tormented past and psyche that fans have not seen before. Combined with refined gameplay, jaw-dropping visuals, and a fresh twist on competitive gaming with our new online multiplayer mode, I guarantee that God of War: Ascension will give fans what they have been eagerly waiting for, and much more.”
Pappy put a lot of emphasis into the multiplayer component of the latest God of War; a series first. Players can compete in both online and offline multiplayer battles, based off the single player campaign, supporting up to 8 players. These will also include customizable avatars, armor and weapon types. During multiplayer mode you can choose to align yourself with one of 4 legendary Greek gods: Zeus, Ares, Poseidon or Hades. By earning their approval you unlock new powers and customization options.
Gamers have also been told to expect “significant strides” to create “unmistakable realism” within the gameplay experience. Alongside a revamped combat and weapon system, promptless mini-games, new puzzle challenges, lifelike characters, and most importantly, world changing scenarios, this could be the best God of War title yet.
God of War: Ascension will be released in 2013. Are you looking forward to the series first multiplayer outing?
