Its official, after 12 long years the PlayStation 2 has ceased production. The last remnant of the sixth generation has retired, but with over 155 million consoles sold, it’s widely regarded as the best-selling console of all time.
Whilst its relevance has faded with age, the PlayStation 2 still managed to claw around a million sales a year, competing with Sony’s handhelds. The PlayStation 2 was an unparalleled success on Sony’s part, due to the flawless combination of varying assets. With a back catalogue that spans 10,000 games and 1.52 billion software sales since launch, it’s no wonder heavy hitting franchises like Final Fantasy and Grand Theft Auto found a home on PS2.
